Movie Review -- Diabolically Yours (1967) by Ugur Akinci
"Diabolically Yours," despite the fact that it is in English, should still count as a French film noir (the phrase itself is French anyways) thanks to Alain Delon's tongue-in cheek acting. A classic nevertheless...
The theme is somewhat similar to that of "Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte." Our main character is the focus of a plot to convince him that he is going crazy and perhaps should end his own life to make things easy on others... especially those who would benefit nicely thank you from our character's self-inflicted demise.
(But for some real hard-core French noir, you must of course see "Un Flic" and "Le Samourai" (both by Alain Delon), and the unforgettable, creepy all-time classic (drum roll please!) "Alphaville" !)
Here are the plot points:
ESTABLISHING SHOT: A fast car driven recklessly along a narrow French country road...
HERO'S DILEMMA: Our main character is very much attracted to his "wife" but... she is not really his wife and he doesn't know who she is although she claims she is his wife! Sweet problem.
INCITING INCIDENT: Traffic accident. Not good.
FIRST PLOT POINT: Hero is taken to a walled mansion. Tat-ta!
MID POINT: The hero finds a man buried in the garden, presumably the man he is forced to impersonate. Things getting ugly.
SECOND PLOT POINT: The hero finds under his bed the tape recorder that was playing subliminal tapes to have him commit suicide. Uh-oh!
THIRD ACT RESOLUTION: After bad guys kill one another, the hero decides to become the person that he refused to be from the very beginning of the film and resume a new life with his gorgeous "wife." The hero gives up his principles for hedonism and comfort. How do you like them apples?
(Compare this with the jarring and very different endings in UN FLIC and LE SAMOURAI.)
