Prince William Has Got His Football Kits And You?
by Lee Kirby
The Duke of Cambridge took part in a football game on Christmas Eve after he had travelled to the Queen's Estate in Sandringham. The 29-year-old played alongside villagers and estate workers on land owned by Tory peer Lord Greville Howard and had a shot on goal saved in the 30th minute.
His team wore white Castle Rising shirts as part of their football kits and won 4-2. At one point in the game midfielder William, who wore England shorts and light blue Aston Villa socks, high-fived his teammates who had scored.
He also allegedly didn't shy away from any tackles although there were plenty of quite handy players on the pitch. According to onlookers, the Duke of Cambridge was chasing the ball all over the place and clearly enjoying himself, most of the time grinning away.
Aston Villa football club
Aston Villa football club is the favourite club of the Duke of Cambridge. It's an English professional association football club based in Witton, Birmingham, founded in 1874. It's one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in England, having won the First Division Championship seven times and the FA Cup seven times. Aston Villa also won the 1981- 82 European Cup, one of only four English clubs to win that.
The traditional colours of the club's football kits are claret shirts with sky blue sleeves, white shorts and sky blue socks. Their traditional crest is of a rampant gold lion on a light blue background with the club's motto underneath.
Famous Aston Villa fan
The Duke of Cambridge is an ardent Aston Villa supporter. He attended the 2000 FA Cup semi-final between Aston Villa and Bolton and went into the dressing room to congratulate the players on reaching the showpiece event after the game.
Prince Charles once revealed that when he opened the Trinity Road Stand in 2001 he was under orders to return to Buckingham Palace with a pair of Villa socks for William. William has never spoken of his decision to follow the claret and blue side as part of his football kits but it's believed that he began following the club in his early years at Eton.
The popularity of football in the UK is growing every day. Even the members of the Royal family enjoy playing football and have their favourite football clubs. Furthermore statistics showed there were well over 100,000 registered female footballers at the end of 2005. This was almost a ten-fold increase from the 11,200 registered in 1993, attesting both to the popularity of female football and the cross-gender appeal of the sport generally.
